Dr. Sylvia Moraa Mochabo Akinsiku

Dr. Sylvia Moraa Mochabo Akinsiku, a passionate advocate for disability rights and a leading figure in the field of neurodevelopmental disabilities. Dr. Akinsiku’s journey is not only that of a dedicated professional but also that of a mother who has personally navigated the challenges of caring for two children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Epilepsy and psychosocial disabilities. As the Founder and Executive Director of Andy Speaks 4 Special Needs Persons Africa, she has been a driving force in influencing national and international policy agendas, implementing impactful communication strategies, leading advocacy initiatives, designing impactful programs, and enhancing access to rehabilitation services. Her work has yielded concrete policy changes and initiatives, ensuring the inclusion of neurodiverse individuals in vital discussions. In recognition of her unwavering commitment, Dr. Akinsiku has received numerous awards, including an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Divine Leadership, Winner Autism Hero’s Award – People’s choice UK 2023, FOYA Social Founder of the year 1st runner up in Africa, winner Biashara Africa Diversity & Inclusion 2023, Women in Business Social Enterprise of the year 2022, being named one of the Top 20 Influential Women of 2022 by Thuba Pelo Mosadi Magazine in South Africa among several other nominations. Her lived experience as a caregiver and advocate has provided invaluable insights into the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and their families, reinforcing her dedication to improving their lives.

As a Founding Member of Andy Speaks for Special Needs Persons Africa, I champion the rights and well-being of individuals with special needs across the continent. I am a dedicated Senior Occupational Therapist with over 14 years of experience in delivering exceptional patient care across clinical, educational, and private settings. Passionate about empowering individuals to regain independence and improve their quality of life, I specialize in rehabilitation therapy, adaptive strategies, and personalized care plans for diverse populations.

Currently serving at Nexus Therapy Centre, I leverage my expertise to provide comprehensive therapy solutions that cater to physical, cognitive, and sensory needs. My previous tenure at Aga Khan University Hospital honed my skills in delivering cutting-edge therapeutic interventions and mentoring future therapists.

Beyond my professional practice, I have contributed to community welfare through volunteer work at renowned institutions such as the National Spinal Cord Injury Hospital and Therapies For Kids. These experiences have shaped my holistic approach to therapy, focusing on both physical recovery and emotional well-being.

With extensive experience in interpretation, special needs education, and social work, I thrive on creating accessible and empowering environments for the deaf and special needs communities.

Currently serving as Deputy Lead of the Special Needs Resource Hub at Andy Speaks for Special Needs Persons Africa and an administrator at Nexus Therapy Centre, I bring a unique blend of expertise in interpretation, resource coordination, and advocacy. My prior roles in media, education, and content creation have honed my ability to adapt and innovate in diverse professional settings.

Armed with qualifications in Counseling Psychology, Social Work, and Advanced Sign Language Interpretation, I am committed to promoting inclusivity and improving access to services for marginalized groups. My mission is to make a tangible impact by fostering understanding and equity across communities.

Her approach combines evidence-based techniques with a compassionate touch, ensuring that each client receives personalized care tailored to their unique needs. Lucy is committed to making a positive impact by helping clients achieve their communication goals and improve their quality of life.

When she’s not at work, Lucy enjoys engaging in community outreach programs that advocate for better access to speech and language therapy services in underserved areas of Kenya.

In this role, he has contributed to the organization since March 2019, bringing his expertise in financial management and legal operations.
